BIOGRAPHY

HAVE A GREAT READING...

Acadian singer songwriter NATHALIE RENAULT invites spectators to explore the realm of jazz and pop... and enchantment!

Originally from Campbellton, New Brunswick, she has completed a Bachelor's degree in Music from the Université du Québec à Montréal and a certificate in jazz studies from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish. She has performed all over Québec, New Brunswick, and Europe these past few years. She has shared the stage with Nanette Workman, Pierre Flynn, Philippe LaFontaine, Karen Young, Claude Léveillé and Zachary Richard among others.

Nathalie Renault's songs combine both jazz and pop characteristics into a unique, fresh, dynamic style. She brings much expression to her songs using counterpoint and scat, which she produces with both her voice and the piano. Indeed, the piano, her inseparable companion, seems to melt with her voice, creating the beautiful, expressive style that she is so well known for.

Nathalie is usually accompanied by an excellent double-bass musician and drummer.

WHAT SOME HAVE SAID...

"Acadian chanteuse Nathalie Renault was the other featured performer at the CRDC Gala. This gamin, bubbly, sparkling entertainer who hails originally from Campbellton, presented a wide variety of vocal numbers, from her own compositions to a modern, jazzed up version of the old Frank Sinatra standard On For My Baby. Ms. Renault's vocal style is particularly suited to jazz. There is a Sarah Vaughan quality in her voice and she has terrific control and dynamics. Perhaps more importantly, she puts her emotions into a song."

Daily Gleaner, Fredericton, March 10, 1992.

Nathalie Renault - Live at the Jazzhaus, Freiburg
"A brilliant vocalist/pianist, accomplished composer and artist of extra class, the 'voice of Canadian Pop-Jazz' has emerged as a phenomenon on the European music scene."

Urban World News Release

"Nathalie Renault would have the venue she deserves in Québec by specializing in jazz… she is one of the rare ones to have such a repertoire here at home, and the doors are wide open for her. A singer with soul." (translation)

Serge Drouin, Journal de Québec

"Music and song are at the core of Nathalie Renault's life; in a sense, her sensitivity captures the shape of music. She profoundly breathes sensitivity. She gives herself completely, unconditionally through her art. We have too few artists of this calibre to let them fade away."

Jules Boudreau, Caraquet, N.-B.

"Nathalie Renault suggests a style that is quite rare in Québec, from the French song to pop-jazz sung au féminin, which she interprets beautifully well while accompanying herself at the piano."

Gilles Gagné, Le Soleil

"What lingers after listening to the CD is an ambiance resulting from the fusion of words, vocal intonations, instrumental colours, from this vocal performance in which words and scat intermingle. Everything becomes an hymn that celebrates life without wanting to stifle its difficulties. Nathalie Renault, this faiseuse de chansons, is a fille des chansons, and, as she puts it herself in Chanter, there is nothing that makes her more beautiful to herself and to us."

David Lonergan, L'Acadie Nouvelle

"A breath of fresh air in the French music CD scene. It is one of the best CD's I've received since the beginning of the year, and even in a long time. Listening to Nathalie Renault's CD is like savouring candy."

Marc Lalonde, album critic for cententrart.qc.ca

"Singer-songwriter and pianist Nathalie Renault belongs to a rare kind: those who know that the song that lasts has a combination of freedom and discipline, where surprise is created from defined elements: harmony, melody and poetry. To which we can add, in this case, a serious dose of swing! By choosing the "trio" formula, Nathalie Renault may find herself confined to jazz. This would be too bad, as her songs draw from so many sources: the fluid scat found in La fille des chansons needs not envy Ella Fitzgerald (which is not to be dismissed). Par en-dedans has a funky touch to it, and La faiseuse de chansons brings us back to Diane Tell's early years, when we could hear the same freedom in the way of phrasing. "

Dominique Denis, L'Express, Toronto

Incomparable - The Magic of Nathalie
"Nathalie Renault, this swanlike person, a pianist and singer-songwriter, radiates such energy that her songs and the stories she tells seem incomparably authentic. In short, this woman shares her soul with us. She loves to slow down her tempi to draw sentimental sounds from the piano, while offering chords of incredible strength. Also magnificent is the way she plays with her voluminous voice. Music is her life, she says and sings."

Daniela Barth, TAZ, Bremen, Germany

Under her spell
"Nathalie Renault gave an exceptional performance. On the topic of musical discoveries, the Canadian vital market often surprises us with rock, folk or singer-songwriter style voices. French Canadian Nathalie Renault, who lives in Montréal, focuses more on jazz, but with an interpretation of this genre that goes beyond its boundaries in other musical directions. Those who have had the chance to see her have experienced a beautiful moment of musical seduction. Nathalie is able to express herself in a tender, yet energetic way. While she has a clear and stable voice, she can also sing in a light, delicate and dynamic fashion. She can just as well accentuate her vocal improvisations with an Ostinati bass, and move to harmony-filled phrases where voice and piano seem to melt together uni sono!"

Andre Hesel, WESER KURIER, Bas-Sachs Allemagne

ECMA jazz contender stellar
"Campbellton, New-Brunswick singer/pianist/songwriter Nathalie Renault sings everything with the authority of marrow-deep knowledge. Her voice is soft, musically sweet, and exquisitely in tune and her diction is superbly clear. Her lyrics are bright, ironic and full of surprising turns of phrase which delight. The music written by Renault is catchy, bouncy and naturally fluent. The ensemble sound with its thoroughly mastered pop/jazz modes shows both musical and verbal literacy of a high order, in a CD filled with appealing, accessible, swinging jazz to which Renault adds a scat chorus here and there that do not fail to enchant."

Stephen Pedersen, The Sunday Herald, Halifax N.S.
